JavaONE 2007: Java Technology in TV: Blu-ray Disc and Cable Day

Television has been a target market for Java technology dating back to its very roots as Oak, where the "Green Team" locked themselves in an office in 1991 and eighteen months later emerged with the StarSeven, an interactive, handheld home-entertainment device controller with an animated touchscreen user interface. We've come a great distance since then. Java technology forms the basis for digital television platform standards worldwide, from cable and broadcast television to IPTV to next generation high definition optical media. In only the last twelve months we've seen North American cable operators move from trials to full deployment of OCAP-enabled set-top boxes and televisions, broadcasters and service providers from Italy to Korea have launched dozens of interactive applications and services targeting MHP devices, and consumers have purchased millions of Blu-ray players and movies worldwide.
